February has been designated as Heart Month and Prospect Medical would like to remind our members of the dangers of heart disease and how to prevent it.
Heart disease is related to plaque buildup on the artery walls. As plaque builds up, blood flow through the arteries is restricted and increases the risk of heart attack or stroke. Other types of heart disease include:
Arrhythmia
Heart Attack
Heart Failure
Strokes
Congenital Heart Defects
Factors that can contribute to a higher increase of heart diseases include high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Heart disease is preventable by changing life habits early. Even if you have already suffered a heart attack or a stroke, you can follow the guidelines below for a healthier heart:
Exercise regularly
Eating healthy
Maintain a healthy weight
Avoid smoking
Comply with medications
